Determination of artificial sweeteners using LC-MS/MS

Artificial sweeteners are added to many foods and cosmetic products. As useful as they are in these areas, they pollute wastewater and groundwater. Therefore, powerful LC-MS/MS applications for the most common artificial sweeteners acesulfame, saccharin and cyclamate are essential.

Guidelines for an effective purification method development

Chromatographic purification on a research scale is a must-have in many areas such as academia and pharmaceutical research. However, this can be very time consuming. Therefore, effective development of the purification method is essential.

These guidelines demonstrate the main steps for an effective purification method development:

  1. Developing a well-optimised separation on analytical scale
  2. Loading study on analytical scale
  3. Scale-up to semi-preparative column dimensions
  4. Quality control/proof of concept

How chelating agents can easily be analysed using truly inert column hardware

Metal-coordinating compounds such as chelating agents can interact with the metallic surface of the column body, frits, etc. This can lead to decreased recovery, deteriorating peaks and sample carry-over.To overcome these challenges truly inert column hardware such as YMC-Accura columns can be used.

In this applications note the chelating agents 8-hydroxyquinoline and hinokitiol were analysed using a bioinert coated YMC-Accura Triart C18 column and compared to the corresponding stainless-steel column.

Bioinert coated YMC-Accura Triart columns provide:

  • Higher recovery
  • Improved peak shapes
  • Greater reproducibility
